College Automation

Introduction

We are going to build a new device that would help the facility saves energy. We found out that currently College classes and labs having their electrical appliances on days and nights, which waste a considerable amount of energy. Among of these, the light and the air-conditioning system use most of the power in the building. So, we are aiming to build a device that will install in a room which can automatically turn off window air-conditioners and lights by users’ preference.

Objective

The overall goal of this project is to design and successfully implement a temperature sensitive device with a simple control interface in order to control the on/off of the window air-conditioners and the lights. This device has two modes, Free Mode and Schedule Mode.
College Automation

Features:

  • Free Mode
  • Allow users to set a timer for turning on the light and AC (Maximum: 2 Hours).
  • Once the timer goes to zero, light and AC will be turned off automatically
  • Users can reset the timer anytime.
  • Schedule Mode
  • Allow users to set a time period (e.g. 11am-3pm) that will turn on the light and AC without interruption.
  • The schedule will apply from Monday to Friday only.
  • If NO SCHEDULE is set or anytime other than the scheduled time, the device will run in Free Mode.
  • Allow users to set a desired temperature within a range. (Between 50oF to 80oF)
  • The device works like a thermostat, sensing the room temperature and shut down the AC if needed.
  • A warning signal (Beep-Sound) will be set off 10 minutes before the light and AC systems are cut-off.

Benefits:

  • Simple and user-friendly interface.
  • Professors can use the Schedule Mode to fit their office hours.
  • Automatically switches between the two modes.
  • LCD interface will light on once the lighting system of the room is turned off for users to easily locate it.
Our goal is to save energy and money for the MEL
